Project Updates--DenveRhetor and Project Angel Heart

To make sure that everyone is up to speed on their current projects, I'd like you to post an update here on our course blog about what you're up to. This will help us see where everyone is at, as well as alerting us to questions, concerns, or challenges that we may be facing.

First, give us a detailed description of the status of both your writing project for Project Angel Heart and your work thus far on DenveRhetor. Then, share with us any questions you have about these assignments or challenges that you are facing. How can we help out? Conversely, feel free to share any exciting news or something that has gone well so far.

  2. Alex and I have started to form and idealize our project for PAH. It is a process however and still needs lots of touches and editing. It is a project filled with promise and will be a great asset to PAH when it is finished. My work on the DenveRhetor project is starting and little by little coming together. I have started researching things I want to attend and possibly write about. I am facing the never-ending challenge of piling college homework and finding the time to get everything done. I am trying my best not to procrastinate or push anything aside for a later date, this should help in the process of getting my projects done.

  3. At the moment, both of my projects are in the planning stage. I have decided to attend Robert Kennedy Jr.’s lecture at the Newman center on Thursday, February 12th. I have also decided to see a play at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts titled “Inana.” This play tells the tale of an Iraqi woman whose life is turned upside down by the US’s invasion of Baghdad. Both these public events sound extremely interesting as well as educational. I think that it will be very easy to write about these events.
The piece for Project Angel Heart is a little more difficult to plan because my partner, MaryKate, has a different schedule than I do and we need to coordinate times to go visit Randy’s Kitchen. Other than that, we have decided to write the piece on the journey of a PAH meal. We will write it in chronological order, but backwards; we will start with the client that the meal is helping, flashback to the kitchen workers and the different menus that PAH must provide for their client’s many needs, and end with where the food comes from and how the majority of their food is donated and locally grown or originated. We are very excited to begin writing this piece, but I am nervous about trying to coordinate times to interview the chefs and other people at Project Angel Heart.

  4. For the project angel heart assignment, I am currently in communication with Lakesha Jones regarding an event to set up for us to gather information from. Kate and I have chosen to write about the impact of Project Angel Heart on the lives of the families. Lakesha sent me a few suggestions of how we could gather information for this between sitting in on an interview, scheduling a phone interview, or sending us a profile of a woman with breast cancer. I am currently waiting on an e-mail from her on which would be most convenient for her and how we can go about setting it up.
For the DenveRhetor assignment, I have chosen by two events that I will gather information from. I will be attending an on-campus lecture this afternoon regarding Bioethics and then this weekend will be visiting the off campus site of the Denver Art Museum. After doing this I can start to write my accounts of these experiences.
My questions at this time are the length of each of the papers. Also, what particular angels should we be analyzing for the DenveRhetor assignment.

  5. Jen and I sent an email to Lakeasha about who we were interested in interviewing and are waiting for a reply. We took some time to write down some questions that we want to ask and though about the structure of our article. It's a work in progress, but once we get that interview we should produce an article shortly after that.
As for the DenveRhetor project, I registered to see RFK speak on Thursday. I wrote down some questions that i will be trying to answer during the speech. I am looking into a play on Feb. 20 and going to a Buddhist temple. I would be up for going to Mercury Cafe on a Friday night also. I'm starting things, but just waiting for the events. As of right now, I dont really have any questions.

  6. Allison and I have sort of figured out what kind of project we would like to do for Project Angel Heart. We are thinking we will start a blog based off of the PAH Facebook page, and post a different topic every week or so. We still need to decide on the number of posts we will write, how often we will post them, and what topics they will focus on. The goal of the blog will be to arouse interest in potential volunteers, and we are hoping it will become an interactive thing. My personal progress with the DenveRhetor project is not huge, but I have a lot more time now to search for interesting events. Once I find events I think it will be fairly simple to write the two assigned pieces.
