Weekly Blog

Hey guys! Sorry about the late post, Kate and I spent some time trying to decide what we should write about. One thing that came to our minds pretty quickly was the fact that our class is almost finished. This quarter seems like it has gone by so fast, and we have kept busy with our numerous projects in this writing course. We personally found the service learning aspect of the course to be pretty enjoyable; doing the work with Project Angel Heart has felt like we really can make some sort of difference through our writing. Have you guys enjoyed the service learning? Was it what you expected, or has it surprised you in some way? Also, this class is supposed to be about rhetoric in the public sphere, and about making a difference through rhetoric and particularly writing. Do you feel like you have learned how to better do that? Do you think you could take the concepts we learned in our class and apply them to future endeavors? As our class is quickly coming to a close, we would just like to hear your thoughts and reflections on what we've experienced together.

  1. I definitely agree, this quarter has absolutely flown by. Everyone said that on the quarter system the weeks will just fly by, but I honestly feel like I just got back from Christmas break last weekend! I think having skiing has made the time pass because the weekend have just vanished. I feel I have learnt better how to obtain the main point an author is trying to make in a piece of writing. At the same time I am more clearly able to establish what is the main point I want my reader to get from an article. I definitely feel like this class has helped me to grow as a writer. My favorite thing was doing the workshops and getting feedback from classmates. I feel like we were all involved in each other's writings and it was almost as if some of it was completed as group work. Getting opinions from other people help me to establish what I was doing well with my writing and what areas I needed to work. I look forward to writing next quarter to further my writing skills!

  2. The quarter has definitely gone by quickly, no doubt to the busy schedule we've had. In all the work we've done over the past weeks, however short they may seem, I feel I have learned a lot from our writing class. From merely techinical aspects that have improved my writing, to learning of the roles it can play in the public spehere, and the affect writing can have, my concept of what writing is and what it should be used for has changed. I am confident that my new modified view of writing will be extremely useful in my future writing endeavors.

  3. Here's Zach's response:

My experience with PAH could be best described as mixed. I had a great time doing the delivery shift and learned a lot about both my group members and PAH as a whole. On the other hand, though, I did not have a very fun experience in the kitchen though I was thankful for the other volunteers help with our difficult and disgusting task. I was also very thankful for the members of PAH apologizing for making a few first time volunteers taking on such a ridiculous task. I think those two things saved the experience for me but all in all I did not enjoy the kitchen shift. Through the course itself, I have learned quite a bit about rhetoric, especially focusing on the writing aspect of it and I am very happy with the course as a whole. I think this class was definitely my favorite of the quarter and maybe of the year as a whole too. On the course material, I think the vast majority of the assignments really did help teach me about rhetoric in the public sphere and going to the off and on campus events was also a very nice change from regular course material in my other classes. I do feel like I could apply this new knowledge to other endeavors in life and the near future as well. I also think that this class has opened up a whole new way of looking at these kinds of things for me. Instead of just browsing past important speeches or turning away from “boring” articles or prose, I am now more interested in viewing these things and even analyzing them a bit. All in all I’ve had a very positive experience in this class.

  4. There is no doubt about it that this quarter has gone by rather quickly! Professor Bateman has kept us busy with assignments and I feel as if this last week could be the worst! Although this quarter and course has felt short, I have learned so much. I have improved my understanding of rhetoric and the public sphere and how writing ties into that. I thoroughly enjoyed working in conjunction with PAH and felt it to be a very rewarding experience in so many ways. I feel this course has done a lot for me as a writer and has armed me with useful material and skills for the future.

  5. I am happy I took this course and thought I learned a lot. Sometimes it feel a little unorganized and right now there is a lot going on, but as a whole it was pretty enjoyable. I really enjoyed the service learning aspect. I enjoyed writing about my experiences. In high school, community service was a big part of my life and I feel lIke I want to do more now and will always feel the need to be involved in it. I feel like I have a better understanding of rhetoric. Sometimes the things that seem simple can actually be more complex. I feel I will use the things I learned in this class for the future.
